Web Guide: Memory Management, Mobile Directories, More |
|
A few weeks ago we talked about the need for memory management and freeing up memory. I’ve learned of some new freeware that can help with this. Plus, this week I want to mention a couple of mobile directories.
Freeware for Managing Memory
You’ve probably had the experience of being handicapped by low memory on your device. Some new freeware called Oxios Memory, which consists of two applications, helps with that.
Apparently applications sometimes take up memory they don’t really need. Oxios Hibernate attempts to release as much of that memory as possible without altering the state of your open applications on your Pocket PC or Smartphone. Often it can recover quite a lot of memory.
Oxios CloseApps closes down all applications. According to the Web site, each process started on a Windows Mobile-based Smartphone allocates memory that can't be released but that is automatically freed when the application process ends. CloseApps does essentially the same thing as a soft reset but users say it’s a lot faster.
Speaking of memory management, one of the leading commercial software programs for doing this is SKTools. Our blogger Werner offers a detailed write-up about their free beta that’s currently available. This post tells you quite a lot about the various facets of memory management.
News4Mobile Mobile Portal
Mobile Portals continue to grow in popularity with the ubiquity of wireless hotspots and the handy ability to access the Internet via your device when you’re out and about.
Although we’ve already covered the mobile portal New4Mobile, I wanted to touch on it again because the site is moving ahead so quickly to add a range of neat features that distinguish it from other mobile portals.
Instead of showing you categories of sites on the home page, as is usual, News4Mobile puts front and center those sites with the highest ranking as determined by a complex algorithm that includes number of clicks, voting, the quality of their coding, and more. If a site ranks high, you can be assured of its quality and utility.
In addition, News4Mobile has adopted a system of tags that has worked so well on Flickr and other very popular Web 2.0 sites. The tags, which are like user-generated categories, can be sorted in a variety of ways. The default is a "tag cloud," which makes it easy to find the most popular tags.
The site also has a social component. You can set up a personal mobile home page with your favorite mobile sites, and the Members list lets you see the home pages of other users and send them messages.
Speaking of mobile portals, we covered MyPocketStuff a few months ago. I was just looking at it again and saw that that had added more streaming media links. It’s a useful directory.
Also, a new portal that's fast and simple is 247mini (http://www.247mini.com/).
