Product alters Windows Mobile device "personality"
Ascender Corp. is shipping software that can be used to modify the "personality" of Windows Mobile 5.0 device user interfaces. "Ascender Personality Kit" lets users or device makers apply "matched sets" of ringtones, themes, background images, and fonts to their devices, according to the company.

The personality modification tool runs on a Windows PC. It includes over 50 pre-defined sets of personalities -- for example animals, holidays, places, and sports -- based on ringtones and images that were developed in conjunction with a variety of artists, designers, and licensed content sources, Ascender says. Each personality comprises a matched set of UI components, including backgrounds, fonts, ringtones, and the colors of windows, controls, scrollbars, menus, and dialogs.

According to Ascender, the Personality Kit software makes it easy to preview, select, and install a selected personality onto a Windows Mobile device. The software connects to the smartphone via ActiveSync or Windows Mobile Device Center. The device can later be restored to its original settings.

The company claims the kit to be the first Windows Mobile 5.0 software application that modifies the user interface fonts. Each font is "tuned for ClearType for the best quality display on screen."

Availability

Ascender Personality Kit is offered in three Windows Mobile 5.0 versions, supporting Pocket PC Phones with portrait or landscape QVGA screens version, and smartphones with portrait (240x320) or landscape (320x240) displays. The software is immediately available, with a $19.99 list, according to the company.

Ascender also offers an OEM (original equipment manufacturer) version of the software under license to handset manufacturers and wireless carriers.
