Summit Software Release Expands Wireless Security Options
Summit Data Communications, Inc., a leading provider of Wi-Fi® radio modules and cards for business-critical application-specific devices (ASDs), today announced a new software release for Windows CE and Windows Mobile® that offers expanded options for Summit’s robust, standards-based wireless LAN security. Version 1.03.09 of Summit software, which is available to qualified device manufacturers as a free software upgrade for all Summit products, also enhances radio administration and improves the reliability of connectivity and roaming, even in challenging radio environments such as retail stores, distribution centers, hospitals, factories, and ports.

All versions of Summit software support Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA™) and WPA2™, the equivalent of the ratified IEEE 802.11i standard for wireless LAN security. WPA and WPA2 authentication can use static credentials (such as pre-shared keys) or IEEE 802.1X. In addition to the four 802.1X authentication types supported in previous releases – PEAP-MSCHAP, PEAP-GTC, LEAP, and EAP-FAST – V1.03.09 adds support for EAP-TLS. For PEAP and EAP-TLS, which rely on digital certificates to house some authentication credentials, the new software release enables an administrator to store certificates in the Microsoft certificate store on each device. For the Cisco-defined EAP-FAST type, which uses user-specific shared-secret keys called protected access credentials (PACs), V1.03.09 supports PACs created automatically during initial authentication and PACs created manually by an administrator.

The tool of choice for configuration, monitoring, and troubleshooting of Summit radios is a fully integrated application called the Summit Client Utility, or SCU. V1.03.09 improves the look and feel of the tool and adds new information and options. A new scan function lists access points within range and enables you to connect to an AP with a few taps on the screen. With V1.03.09, the SCU Status window includes more information on the AP to which the radio is connected and the connection itself. The new release adds troubleshooting options, including continuous pings and the ability to save a diagnostics log to a file that you specify. V1.03.09 also expands the configuration parameters for connectivity and roaming, enabling customers to customize the behavior of Summit radios to suit the unique characteristics of every environment.

V1.03.09 is available for Windows CE.NET 4.2 and 5.0, Pocket PC 2003, Windows Mobile 5.0, and Windows Mobile 6.0. The release supports all Summit products:

* 10G Family radio modules: SDC-CF10G compact flash module, SDC-PC10G PCMCIA module, and MCF10G miniature compact flash module
* 20G Family radio cards: SDC-CF20G compact flash card and SDC-PC20G PCMCIA card

Once a device manufacturer certifies V1.03.09 for devices that use Summit radios, that manufacturer can load or upgrade to V1.03.09 at no additional charge. Other users of Summit radios can obtain V1.03.09 free of charge from the organization that sold the radios.
