China commissions a Pocket PC Phone for its police |
|
China TechFaith Wireless Communication has contracted with China's Ministry of Public Security to develop a "Pocket PC Phone" for the police forces in two Chinese provinces. The device will feature GPS, an ID scanner, and other features related to onsite law enforcement, the company says.
Under the terms of the contract, TechFaith, a supplier of mobile phones and related application software, will be responsible for manufacturing of the handsets and software integration. Shenzhen Security Software Science and Technology Development Co., Ltd. will provide public security software for the phone.
Although TechFaith's statement provided no information about what operating system the devices will use, beyond referring to them as "Pocket PC Phones," the company has had a relationship with Microsoft China since last year. Under the terms of that "strategic collaboration," the companies said they would work together to "improve the user experience and market share of Windows Mobile-based devices."
TechFaith says the police phone represents the first contract it has received from a Chinese government organization. The device will ship in December, according to the company. Quantities to be delivered under the contract were not disclosed.
Meanwhile, the company earlier this month launched a phone called "Twins," touted as the world's first WCDMA/GSM dual-mode phone, and rumored to be running Windows Mobile 6. According to the company, the phone allows users to load one WCDMA SIM card and one GSM SIM card, or to load a pair of GSM SIM cards, the latter allowing one phone to have several phone numbers. Twins also is said to include a 2.0 megapixel camera, MP3 and MPEG4 players, a WCDMA modem, a video calling function, and "dual Bluetooth."
TechFaith's capabilities include developing software supporting 2/2.5G(GSM/GPRS, CDMA1X), 3G(EV-DO, WCDMA/UMTS, TD-SCDMA) and 3.5G(HSDPA) communication technologies. The company says it is developing smartphone software based on "open operating systems" including Windows Mobile and Linux.
