New GuardianEdge Smartphone Solution Protects and Manages Sensitive Corporate Data on Mobile Devices

GuardianEdge, the leading provider of endpoint data protection for the enterprise, today announced the release of its new Smartphone Protection product providing enterprises and government agencies the ability to protect sensitive data on smartphones and handheld devices. As the latest addition to the GuardianEdge Data Protection Platform, Smartphone Protection extends GuardianEdge's data loss and data leakage protection solutions to address the ever-growing data security exposure that these devices can represent.

This policy-based security enforces "always-on" data protection across all major device platforms (Palm(R), Pocket PC, Windows Mobile(R), and Symbian) including the most extensive list of supported devices from leading manufacturers such as Motorola, Palm, Samsung, Audiovox/Siemens, Dell, HP and more.

"Our mission has always been to help enterprises and government agencies protect their valuable corporate data from physical theft and loss or data leakage from their endpoints with an innovative comprehensive platform that both adheres to industry standards and is easy to maintain," said Ram Krishnan, GuardianEdge senior vice president of products and marketing. "The latest addition to our platform will support compliance with data privacy and security regulations, reducing the risk of substantial customer service costs, damage to brand equity, and legal or business costs and will also be used to protect key IP such as trade secrets, source code and formulas."

GuardianEdge Smartphone Protection provides comprehensive security for enterprise smartphones by ensuring that data on the devices is encrypted and that access to applications, ports, WiFi, and external devices are controlled by policy. In addition, the solution ensures that compliancewith assigned security policies are validated prior to allowing connectivity to enterprise networks. Integration with Active Directory enables security policies to be easily deployed and managed, eliminating the complexity and costs associated with administering and managing thesolution.

Key Functionality Delivers Comprehensive Protection

* Data Loss Prevention -- Provides strong, file level encryption to secure sensitive data and provide legal safe harbor from disclosure requirements in the event a device or externally connected media device is lost. Data protection policies make it easy for the enterprise to protect critical information, while concurrently allowing for personal use of the devices.

* Data Leakage Prevention -- Employs port and device policy based controls for connecting to devices, networks and resources on the smartphone. Software image locking ensures that only appropriate, trusted and approved applications execute on the device. Network firewall protects against malware and other threats. Microsoft(R) Exchange ActiveSync(TM) access control ensures that smartphones meet policy requirements before connecting to e-mail.

* Enterprise-class Management -- Delivers Microsoft(R) Active Directory(TM) integrated administration and standardization of cross-platform device access policies, software usage and resource capabilities across multiple platforms. OTA (Over-the-air) remote management components for software update, provisioning, help desk and device lock/unlock/wipe. Detailed auditing and reporting for compliance and usage.

The Enterprise Need for Data Protection for Mobile Devices

According to a recent Gartner report, last year in taxicabs alone during a six-month period, 239,469 smartphones were left behind. Couple these numbers with the increasing amount of sensitive corporate data traversing these devices and an imminent need for endpoint protection onmobile devices exists. Enterprise organizations need an enterprise-class solution that protects against data loss and the introduction of malware into the network, without hampering the use of smartphone and mobile device technologies.

It only takes one lost smartphone containing important confidential information to expose a company to the risk of damage control costs in the millions and potentially devastating brand reconstruction issues. In the next year or so, the importance of smartphone protection is only going to increase in the data protection market. The GuardianEdge Smartphone Protection solution for this threat is a clear example that the need exists in organizations.
