Aiko Solutions has updated its storage encryption software for Windows Mobile and CE-based smartphones and PDAs. SecuBox version 1.4 automatically unmounts encrypted volumes when a device goes to sleep, and also adds support for Renesas SH4 (SuperH) processors.

SecuBox is designed to let users create secure storage areas on their devices. Data written to the designated areas is automatically encrypted on the fly using AES 256-bit encryption, and decrypted "transparently" later, provided that a password has been entered. Launched in March 2007, the software package was later revised to provide encryption key backup.

Aiko says version 1.4's new ability to unmount volumes automatically when a device sleeps provides added security, while a system tray icon allows them to be remounted quickly by an authorized user. The software also offers a command line option, said to be useful for automating repetitive tasks.

SecuBox is compatible with an extensive range of Windows Mobile OS versions. These include Windows Mobile 6 Professional and Classic, Windows Mobile 5.0 for Pocket PC, Pocket PC Phone Edition, Windows Mobile 2002/2003/2003SE/2005, Pocket PC /2002/2003/Phone Edition, and Windows CE 3.0/4.0/4.1/4.2/5.0/5.2, according to the company. Supported processors include ARM, MIPS, SH3, and now, SH4.

SecuBox for Pocket PC is currently available for around $40. A free 30-day trial is available on the company's website.
