Free Wi-Fi provider launches software for Windows Mobile, Facebook

WeFi, a Wi-Fi software company, released software for both Windows Mobile and Facebook that the company says will improve Wi-Fi connectivity and help create broader open Wi-Fi networks worldwide.

WeFi creates software that can be downloaded onto laptops or mobile devices that the company says will enhance Wi-Fi connectivity and provide mobile devices with more powerful connection tools. Once the software is installed, it begins searching for Wi-Fi hotspots in a user's area and allows them to map all the hotspots in their vicinity through the Google Maps application. The eventual goal of the software, WeFi says, is to create a global map of wireless hot spots that can be used as a reference for members of the WeFi community who want to find Internet access in new locations. So far, the company says it has mapped more than 250,000 Wi-Fi hotspots worldwide.

WeFi's new software for Windows Mobile devices will allow any smart phone or pocket PC with Windows Mobile as its operating service to connect to Wi-Fi hotspots with the same enhanced capabilities as WeFi's software for laptops, the company says. The company's Facebook application, called "I Am Here Now," allows WeFi Facebook users to locate any of their Facebook friends in real time who are using WeFi and who are connected through any of the Wi-Fi access points located on WeFi maps.

WeFi says the Facebook application is just the latest social networking tool that it has developed for its users. WeFi's laptop software, for instance, comes with instant messaging services and "additional community features" that help users communicate with friends and coworkers.

"WeFi is taking Wi-Fi communication to the next generation, building a global community of people that support open Wi-Fi networks," says WeFi CEO Zur Feldman, who also adds that he and his company "want free and high performance Internet access anytime, anywhere and on any application."
