Friday evening Microsoft links, Truecrypt edition

Here are the links for the first Friday of June:

* If you liked the recent collaborations between Microsoft and Facebook, but you couldn't figure out how to get the same on Windows Mobile, Snap2Face is for you. It is supposed to be the first Facebook application specifically designed for Windows Mobile Pocket PC and Smartphones.

* PerformancePoint users might want to go check out the "PerformancePoint Server 2007 Planning Data Migration Tool," which was recently made available on TechNet and the Microsoft Download Center. At only 666KB, it's worth the download.

* Powershell users will love this one. Bruce Payette, Principal Developer of the Windows PowerShell Team, has put together an 8-page card that covers the PowerShell language, common commands, and examples. You can download the PDF over at RefCardz.

* The first Live Mesh wallpapers have been posted by Steve Clayton. If that's not your cup of tea, maybe these breathtaking ones by Mike Swanson, a Microsoft Technical Evangelist, will pique your interest (one of them was bundled with Vista, can you spot it?).

* Some of you may be aware of the new General Distribution Release for Visual Studio Team System 2008 Database Edition, but even if you aren't, I would recommend watching this video over at Channel 9. It's a very detailed 37 minute interview with Gert Drapers about the new release and why Microsoft has put it together.

* Also worth watching is this video that demonstrates where the machine translation team over at Microsoft is in terms of "instant translations." Most of it we've already seen before, but the prototype at the end is pretty interesting.

* If you have some free time and a Windows 5/6 Mobile device, I insist you download this preview from Microsoft. The beta release essentially turns your Windows Mobile device into a Bluetooth SideShow device. Pretty nifty!

* Are you just learning Microsoft Access, or would you like to expand your skillset? The Access Team Blog has put together some free training courses for both Access 2003 and Access 2007.

* The various SQL Server 2008 RC0 downloads have been posted for both MSDN and TechNet subscribers. Microsoft is asking for feedback via Microsoft Connect.

* Readers interested in learning more about Windows Communication Foundation (WCF) and Windows Workflow Foundation (WF) should check out the upcoming June 2008 webcasts. The same applies to you if you're into architecture: Aspiring Architect Series 2008.

* Following the recent update to MSDN and TechNet, Microsoft has replaced the Windows XP and Windows Vista TechCenters with a single new Windows Client TechCenter. The new site seems to be a bit more streamlined.

* The ZN9B is supposed to be the world’s first clock radio for the Zune. You can pre-order it from iHome for a mere $99, assuming you're okay with its rather hefty look.

Per the title, this week's free, third-party application recommendation is TrueCrypt, the latest version of which is 5.1a. This open source software is available for Windows, Mac, and Linux. It is the best free encryption program I've seen so far, and it's updated on a frequent basis. Most things don't need to be encrypted, but if you work in an environment where you'd rather be safe than sorry, this one is for you. Enjoy!
