Not an iPhone Fan? Try Windows Mobile for GPS

So much attention has been given to the iPhone 3G -- its sexy styling, fancy applications, less-than-savory navigation skills (whoops, that one slipped), that you may be thinking it's the only Smartphone device that currently offers GPS capabilities.

Not true. Windows Mobile phones accept several GPS navigation software platforms, and to some purists, are a better value than the 3G. Information Week's blogger explains said purists' point of view:

"While the iPhone has no doubt revolutionized the way we use mobile devices and the mobile Web, I have to wonder why they limited themselves so much," he writes, referring to the iPhone's sole service provider, AT&T. "On the other hand, Windows Mobile can be used on a variety of devices, on any network carrier, and can be enhanced by different device's functionality like GPS and Wi-Fi support."

According to CNET, the HTC Mogul PPC 6800 or Samsung Blackjack ii are two of the best non-iPhone Smartphones with GPS. "The small screens don't make them ideal for in-car use," senior editor Bonnie Cha writes, "and the GPS radio will have an effect on battery life, but the voice prompts and always having your car charger can help alleviate those problems."

Pocket PC Magazine's favorite GPS app -- ahem, software -- for Windows Mobile is iGuidance, which "includes text-to-speech capabilities to announce street names and upcoming turns as you approach them."

Still, reviewers uphold many of the iPhone's capabilities, and Apple is working to increase GPS functionality. TeleNav is in the hopper to develop a true turn-by-turn navigation application for the new iPhone, one that will most likely have the same functions as the TeleNav GPS Navigator, a service PC Magazine says "offers a lot of the flexibility found in much more expensive portable standalone GPS devices."

Still undecided on what type of navigation functions you need? Check out these nav system buying tips before you go shopping for a device with GPS functions.
